Here is a few screenshots showing while Aiming down the sight, and while not aiming down the sight, also compensating for recoil as well.
MAC 10 Zoomed left unzoomed right. Both without compensating for recoil.
Same story here for the m16
MAC10 Same tests, right being zoomed, left unzoomed, with recoil compensation.
Same as above right zoomed, left unzoomed, with recoil comp.
As you can see the MAC10 has a very similar group as the M16 with 10 more rounds. It also has a faster rate of fire and lowered recoil.

Thanks!
In the first M16 pic, the left group actually goes higher up than the right series. From the description the left one would be zoomed, is that correct?

Oh yes that is correct, the left is unzoomed, and the right is zoomed.

You're contradicting yourself here but I think you mean that the descriptions to the third and fourth pictures apply to all four pictures.
Edit: I've done some additional testing. It seems that the MAC-10 is effective (as in it is reasonable to kill someone within just a few short bursts; you won't necessarily have to reload) up to about 2000 game units. Beyond this distance, you basically need to unload a lot of short bursts and reload at least once to kill anything. I'll get you a picture to show you just what that looks like.
The M16 is harder to give an accurate maximum range to. It really depends on how the spread cooperates with you. Generally, beyond 2500 game units or so though, you have to shoot so slowly (or expend so much ammo) that you would have to be pretty lucky to kill anything. Your target will most likely get away, and you might be called out. It's just not worth the risk in most cases.
I'm going to have to review my tests again before I can give you a more reliable figure for the M16, but the fact of that matter is that while the M16 may be 'better' from a certain range on (perhaps even lower than the MAC-10's maximum range), the MAC-10 is still easier to use up to around 2000 units. You just shoot a few short bursts and move; if the target it wounded, they're dead. If not, you're going to probably want to move about before shooting again. The M16, on the other hand, requires a lot more time and effort up to this range. It's more powerful and more accurate, but it's so much slower and the recoil plus spread make it such that if you don't slow down considerably, you'll just be wasting time and ammo. It's awfully hard to explain this though. You're better off playing the game if you want to truly understand the balancing.
Lowering the recoil when zoomed is indeed probably the best balancing solution for the M16. For the MAC-10, it would be more practical to make all damage fall with range than just headshots--though then it would still be far better than the shotgun and the HUGE overall--so you should probably do what I suggested and increase the recoil and spread.

Imo the feeling that mac10 is overpowered comes from the bad registry, m16 pretty much needs that one headshot to kill people, otherwise it's too slow. On the other hand mac10 doesnt gain much boost from a headshot.
A good balance would probably be making the m16 more accurate and giving it more base damage but not increasing the headshot damage.

This is definitely part of the problem. It also explains why the sniper is impractical in almost every situation, and how the pistol can compete with the Deagle.
I don't think buffing the M16 in the way you're describing would fix the problem, though, as the other weapons would remain relatively weak. Unless everything else is buffed considerably, the MAC-10 needs a nerf.

I've modified all the weapons on the server I run for balance, and it's definitely working from what i've seen.
M16 - Fires slightly faster, less recoil, more headshot damage (No longer shite)
MAC10 - More spread + Recoil (You could snipe people with that fucker)
Pistol + Silenced Pistol - Fires slightly faster, less spread (No longer shite)
Glock - Higher damage, but no longer fully automatic
Shotgun - More damage on headshots, slightly higher spread

I disagree the M16 has always been 1337 for me, although I know that you Pete never have 1000 karma so :/

Garry sent me some beta keys and I also have access to the SVN again, so chances are the new gmod update will have a working TTT inside.
Perhaps I should hand out the 4 keys I have left over to people who can help test TTT. Not sure how that would work though, if you can even run gmod beta dedicated servers, etc.

Yes, there are ways to run dedi servers on Gmod Beta. Last I checked there wasn't an easy way such a just having scrds install all the needed files. I believe you had to install a normal gmod server and copy over all the files from the gmod beta. There was a couple posts on FP about it but I didn't really pay attention. Only thing I do know is that it is definitely possible.
"Just download the server portion from HLDSUpdateTool, then clear the orangebox/garrysmod out and SVN the beta into that folder."
From Garry, "Yeah that should work.. make sure you copy all the dlls from the bin/ and garrysmod/bin/ "
"Well the whole garrysmod folder really? "

I would like to have a key, considering I am a server owner... SniperDuck or Bipolar should get one, maybe the other two to dev's?

So by your logic, everyone that owns a TTT server should get a beta key? He needs people who can help him, not people who just want to help themselves.

I would help in anyway possible. Meaning hosting a server and testing. With that said, either way I am fine with it. I will always try to help even if it's once the beta is released. With that said, he should give it the build testers most likely. They have more experience helping him out.

Two notes
1) Killjoy
2) No, I am offering to have a Server setup so BKU doesn't need to trouble himself

Probably not so with any semi-recent TTT releases.
