Whats up with the version numbers? It's ridiculously confusing because it goes up and down? Like how did it go from v280410 to v050510?

The numbers are a date in European format: day-month-year. So v050510 means it was released on the 5th of May 2010.

Now that he mentions it, wouldn't it make more sense if it were yymmdd instead of ddmmyy?

Nope? Dates are dates and I write them DD-MM-YY.

No one, I'm just saying that then the version number would properly increment instead of jumping around as it does now from month to month.

Fundamentally it's not really a traditional version number, just an identifier.
I don't want to suddenly switch numbering schemes. Would it help avoid confusion if I added dashes, eg. 05-05-10?

Considering, a good amount of people, thought they were version numbers because you put a v before every number, I doubt switching schemes would confuse anyone. Not that you were saying that, I'm just throwing it out there. I just think Andy makes a really good point, year first would increment. However dashes would be nice, that better not be sarcasm on your part mister.

The date technically is the version number.

I have to say I wholeheartingly agree with Meta-Stick and Andy. It is so confusing at the moment that changing it would not make a difference.
Although it makes sense now, but I was extremely confused when I saw the download page and thought the newest version was at the bottom, as it was the bigger version number.

I don't see any reason it shouldn't be available on an SVN.. It would be easier to keep up with minor updates.
