I am Hereby involved within this project and will not distribute the
provided development kit content without the authors (Silverstream's) permission.
============================================================
=========================
Operation Suburb
=========================

For All Mappers Interested, the following is a mapping project I have formulated
known as: PrOjEcT SuBuRb

Objective:

==============================
To have mappers within this community come together and create their own
suburban homes which will be submitted to myself for the creation of a highly-detailed
suburban environment
t for the game mode "Trouble in Terrorist Town".

Work Flow and Project Details:

==============================
Any Mappers interested will download the formalized "Suburb Development Kit" available below. And will submit their finalized completed work to myself via e-mail to "radiantfusion1@gmail.com".

Download Links For the Suburb Development Kit have been removed.

The due date for user submissions, May 5th, has past.

Below is the Completed Criteria of the Project:

1. Maps MUST be submitted in the following format:
                                 "USERNAME_HOUSE.VMF"
             EX: "SILVERSTEAM_HOUSE.VMF"

2. No Mansions or Obscene Structures Allowed. Each house MUST be similar in aspect to the house included within the dev_house.vmf provided. "Who would want to live in a suburban neighborhood with funky looking houses anyways?"

  Ex: Window models used in the dev_house.vmf MUST be the same. "Not Applicable as of April 19th" Use any window models available or create your own windows.

  Ex: The Prop_door_rotating entity with door model MUST be used as the door.
  Ex: No Three floored houses. "These aren't mansions." Attics are allowed as well as basements.

3. If you desire to use custom textures/models within your map be sure to include the files within your e-mail you submit to me. Please keep mind that these models MUST be within their proper folders.

4. Do not take Authorship of dev_house.vmf or UPLOAD it to ANY website or Server or other storage media (ex. Flash disk drive, Hard-Disk Drive etc.) without my Foreknowledge and Permission. Do not utilize the content other then the textures which were used within dev_house.vmf for constructing mapping material not for "Project Suburb" without my permission. This is PURELY instructional material given to help INSPIRE you with the CREATION of your home. I invested my time to create this home so please do not abuse this privilege.

5. Spend time BUILDING and DETAILING your homes. Players who look forward to the completion of this map DO NOT want to see POORLY DESIGNED Homes. Take your time in developing ELABORATE BRUSH WORK.

6. Optimize your Houses. If you want to see them work well in the finalized version, take advantage of the various optimizing features of Source Hammer.

  Ex: Func_detail your stairwells/stairs, roofs, and all your complicated brushwork. "Anything that isn't a rectangle! Must be func_detailed!"

Project Dead Line:

==============================

All maps MUST be submitted to "radiantfusion1@gmail.com" no later then
May 5th.
"Deadline Has Been Extended As of April 1st"

Any houses submitted that exhibit poor brushwork and overall design will be ignored.

Dev_house Images:

provided is a link to all the images.

Sorry to disappoint, but there aren't very many [decent] mappers that are really on this forum as far as I've seen. I'd say about 4-5 total counting myself. Just thought I'd give you a heads up seeing as that has been the nail in many a mapping projects' coffins.

Even so, good luck with this.

1200+ hours in Source SDK, and the Source engine is still a mystery.

[decent]... counting myself.

How many houses of this complexity can the source engine handle?

Well, you're not going to find much success here, and frankly the whole "group suburb project" never really does go over well in my experience, but what you've made so far is cool.

Tell you what Ajunk, participate and create a similar house that corresponds with the guidelines I have outlined in the first post. I know you are highly talented with valve hammer due to your work I have seen in the past.

You too Citizen_0001, put together something similar as well. Utilize the content provided and see if you can gather the attention of anyone else you know is familiar with valve hammer and understands how to construct something innovative.

If this project fails, you have full permission to legitimately degrade me in which ever way you feel is fit (The "I told you so! argument).

However,

If this project succeeds, I will allow anyone to modify it in which ever way they feel is needed and will present it as a gift to the community. I'm sure everyone will enjoy it and see it as a stepping stone for custom mapping content.

All though this sounds far-fetched, I swear I will commit myself to fulfilling this project. I do however require the input from those involved (I NEED THOSE HOUSES!  ;) ).

That is all I ask.

Think about it, I'd like to hear an honest reply.

You have to be kidding me.

I made a concrete slab with fences around it and told players to stay there for 5 minutes. I am not a talented mapper.

Anyways, even if I built up the motivation, I simply don't have the time. I barely have time to sleep let alone map.

Hell, though, you seem pretty enthusiastic. I'm sure this will go far. Citizen, pitch in you son of a bitch because this is one of the few game modes a suburb might work in. Silver, I recommend you try and find Officer_Bulbock, Vicconius, and Notary if you can, although they've been offline for quite some time. The DNR and TDR forums might have something to offer too.

I, from the bottom of my heart, wish you the best of luck in this endeavor.

Got some decent textures for us to use? I could make a pretty detailed house, but formatted and only got shitty normal textures.

Go go have at it!.
For more inspiration. The dev_house took 1 week to plan, build and compile. I'm sure anyone is able to create their own detailed house within 2 weeks or so. I left a month open in case anyone had any problems.

Everything is Provided for so you don't need to go around and search for more textures. What you see in the screenshots provided in the first post are the textures I used from these two packs.

All textures are provided within the "House Development Package". This package includes:

1.  Readme.txt - Outlines rules and guidelines
2.  dev_house.vmf - House map file to refer to or use brushwork from
3    Texture pack provided
                        - RealWorldTextures.zip
                        - TexturePackA.rar

So I guess im in. Or am I good enough mapper to participate in this? ;D

As for who may be eligible, everyone is welcomed. Just as long as they are able to complete their houses without breaking any of the outline guidelines.

Contrary to popular belief, I also have limited free time. I am committed to about 3 different mapping projects at any given time too.

I would just end up making a space ship with lasers... and a mailbox.
Houses and suburbs are really fucking boring

....unless you're into roleplaying on gmod......which I think is kind of silly... just standing there... looking at walls....

I'll probably just recreate my own house, with a few adjustments.

I'm working on something but it's likely not going to be accepted. I'm not the greatest mapper ever either. I'll post some screens later.

I'm sure you'll do a great job. Just keep in mind to tie all complex brushwork to func_details and use the provided dev_house.vmf brushwork to help out with your house.

Best of luck to you Zan.
