I started working on a new map yesterday, and before I continue, i'd like to know your opinion about it. It's basicly a train rolling through a tunnel. This is what it looks like at the moment:

Do you like the setting?
If you have a good idea for a train part, let me know.  :)

Train setting is awesome. I would say go for it, but I'm unsure how it works for an actual multiplayer game, everything will be one way only and it will be very tight.
Ps, love how it looks so far.

The roofs will be accessible, so you'll have two ways.

Sounds interesting. Are you going to make the train track run in a circle so that it can keep going infinitely?

Could always make the cars somewhat unrealistically wide/empty so two players can pass by each other.

The tunnel is just a skybox with scrolling textures; the train itself is static. But i might add a second train, which is actually moving. The only problem i see is the performance, since all ragdolls will collide with the moving train.

Just put a trigger_remove with ragdoll filter outside the playable area.

I can see a problem with bodies in the actual train and having it move. I'm pretty sure this is going to cause some major problems.
I'd go for static as you already have and perhaps have a 2nd train pass the other train on occasion, this would result in a purely cosmetic train.

As awesome as it would be to have 2 trains actually moving, I'm not sure if you would want to do that with physics. Not in source at least.

Yeah, moving things like that in source are generally a bad idea.

I have always wondered if it was possible to move the world around an object however, creating the illusion of movement when there is none. If that is possible you might want to look into it.

Oh god that's a hammer nightmare.

Having a static train seems to be the best course of action. Perhaps have two trains "moving at the same speed", and add some ramps or walkways. Perhaps add a double-deck?

Hi.

If you really want 2 trains, you could have one sitting at a station, and the other moving in a small loop. Players could maybe get on the moving train and back off when it comes around.
This could lead to some really long rounds though.

The screens look awesome by the way.

Let me make this very clear so nobody is confused from now on:

Traveling on moving platforms in multiplayer, even with one person (let alone the whole server), is a fucking nightmare in source. The server will shit itself, there will be massive clipping issues, people will constantly fall through the train, it will be frustrating. No. Never. Not possible.

Even in Left 4 Dead, which has just 4 players in a game made specifically for co-op, there are some visible problems with the platforms which, as you may notice, all move at a snail's pace.

Go the static route and let another train occasionally pass by.

I really like this setting. Trains are fucking brilliant.

There's this really amazing obsidian conflict map which makes great use of the skybox. I suggest you check it out.

Cannon 2, where you've been teleported out of the holographic facility created out of your own thoughts, only to have your new posting assaulted seconds after boarding?
May also have been Fireteam 2, though a quick visit to oc_lobby would clear up the confusion.

I'm only guessing here, as the one time I played this map, it was a ZMF game, and I was wandering around the alien ship.

I remember that, but that seriously took skyboxes to the extreme.

That said, an outdoor train map would make me swoon.

I hadn't thought of just moving the skybox textures, it's a good solution.
